Rangpur Protesters Demand Cancellation of Prepaid Electricity Meters

Professor Delwar Hossain addressed the gathering, stating, "Through today's program, it has been proven that the people do not want prepaid meters. Nesco should immediately remove prepaid meters and reinstall postpaid meters." His remarks underscored the widespread public dissatisfaction regarding the utility provider's metering decisions.

Adding to the criticism, Ahsanul Arefin Titu accused the power company of ignoring public sentiment. He stated, "Ignoring public opinion, Nesco has fraudulently installed prepaid meters." The protesters elaborated on the financial burden placed on everyday consumers, pointing out the various deductions that occur immediately upon topping up accounts.

Addressing the specific financial grievances, Anwar Hossain Bablu detailed the mechanics of these deductions during the demonstrations. He stated, "As soon as money is recharged in the prepaid meter, 200 to 300 Taka is deducted for demand charges, meter rent, and service charges. This is unjust." Consequently, he demanded the immediate cancellation of these prepaid meters to alleviate the financial pressure on local households and businesses.

The protest featured a broad coalition of participants and leadership representing various groups, including the Bidut Grahok Forum, Basad, and CPB. Among the notable individuals present and supporting the cause were Professor Delwar Hossain, Ahsanul Arefin Titu, Mirza Babur Babul, Abu Salek, Moniruzzaman Sohel, Shahidul Islam Suman, Keya Begum, Moyna Akter, Hasibur Rahman, Solaiman Ali, Anwar Hossain Bablu, Mominul Islam, and Sajedul Islam Saju.
