Princess Diana's iconic 'revenge dress' heads to Sotheby's auction

Princess Diana's famous black silk dress designed by Christina Stambolian, widely known as the 'revenge dress', is going up for auction at Sotheby's in New York on December 9, 2026. Auction officials have stated that the garment is expected to fetch between £110,000 and £220,000, which translates in United States currency to between $150,000 and $300,000. Morgane Halimi of Sotheby's noted that the piece occupies a unique place in fashion history because it represents one of those very rare moments when a garment transcends fashion to become part of culture history. Halimi added that Diana created a look that no one had ever seen her present before.

Diana originally wore the striking dress on June 29, 1994, to a Vanity Fair fundraising dinner at the Serpentine Gallery. That exact evening famously coincided with the night Prince Charles publicly admitted his infidelity on television. Designer Christina Stambolian recalled that the royal chose not to play the scene like Odette, innocent in white, but was clearly angry and played it like Odile in black. Stambolian noted that Diana wore bright red nail enamel, which observers had never seen her do before, effectively saying let us be wicked tonight.

Morgane Halimi elaborated on the cultural impact of the moment, stating that it allowed Diana to show her resolve to stand up for herself and reclaim the narrative of a story that would have been heartbreaking for anyone in her situation. Anna Harvey previously noted that Diana simply wanted to look a million dollars when she stepped out in the bold ensemble.

Organisers have confirmed that a portion of the proceeds generated from the upcoming December auction will be directly donated to NHS Lothian Charity on behalf of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. Morgane Halimi emphasised that many of the qualities we admire in contemporary style icons—such as the ability to communicate identity, confidence and individuality through dress—were qualities Diana embodied decades earlier.
