Police and Madrasa Students Clash in Brahmanbaria Over Cultural Event
A cultural event at the Brahmanbaria Police Lines sparked a violent clash between police and madrasa students on 19 August, leaving at least 30 people injured. Authorities have since formed a three-member investigation committee and withdrawn three police officers.
A violent clash erupted between police and students from the Darul Arkam Islamia Madrasa on 19 August at the Brahmanbaria Police Lines. The confrontation was centered around a cultural event being held at the location. The ensuing violence resulted in injuries to at least 30 people, including police personnel.
According to Md. Abul Kalam Azad, the incident began after a programme commenced on Tuesday at 7:30 PM. DIG and Superintendent of Police (SP) officials left the Police Lines between 9:15 PM and 9:30 PM. Subsequently, around 11:30 PM, a group of 30 to 40 madrasa students entered through the pocket gate of the main entrance, using the interior flag stand to break chairs. Azad noted that he and the Sadar police station OC brought the situation under control, stating that things have been normal since then.
Discussions regarding the incident continued until dawn. Sirajul Islam stated that authorities would review CCTV footage to identify the culprits, noting that everything would be visible on the footage. During the meetings, representatives from the madrasa demanded that no open-air concerts be held, while the police responded that they would perform their duties without harming others, leading both sides to eventually calm down.
Sajidur Rahman outlined the students' demands, which included prohibiting concerts, taking action against the guilty parties, and ensuring advanced medical treatment for the injured students. Rahman stated that the police accepted all demands and that the Superintendent of Police announced the dismissal of three police officials who had been on duty.
In the wake of the clashes, the Brahmanbaria District Police took administrative action. Three police members were withdrawn from their duties and attached to the Police Lines. Additionally, a three-member investigation committee was formed, headed by the Additional Superintendent of Police for Administration and Finance, to look into the events surrounding the clash.
