Patient Dies in Ambulance Amid Severe Dhaka-Chattogram Highway Jam
A heart patient died inside an ambulance after being trapped in a severe traffic jam stretching across a 40-kilometre section of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. Ongoing road repair work at the Ashariarchar bridge area in Narayanganj caused significant gridlock.
A severe traffic congestion on the vital Dhaka-Chattogram highway resulted in the tragic death of a patient inside an ambulance on August 28, 2025. The incident unfolded as heart patient Amirunnesa was being transported from Lakshmipur to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment, only to become trapped in massive gridlock that brought vehicular movement to a virtual standstill across multiple sections of the highway.
According to Tariqul Hasan, the patient remained stuck inside the stationary vehicle for approximately four hours before passing away at around 3:00 am inside the ambulance. The severe tailback stretched across a massive 40-kilometre corridor starting from Sonargaon all to the way to Iliotganj in Cumilla, leaving countless commuters and emergency vehicles stranded for extended periods since Friday, when heavy congestion and long queues first began appearing across various parts of the highway.
Local authorities and transport witnesses pointed directly to infrastructure maintenance as the primary catalyst for the crisis. Prem Das Roy explained that the core reason for the extensive tailback—extending all the way from Daudkandi to the Meghna toll plaza—stemmed from ongoing road repair operations centered around the Ashariarchar bridge area, noting that Kanchpur highway police station could provide further detailed breakdown.
Sofiul Islam from the Roads and Highways Department elaborated that emergency repair work was actively underway on one of the two lanes at the Ashariarchar section of the highway. Because of these maintenance operations, traffic was forced to navigate through a single operational lane sequentially, creating the temporary but devastating bottleneck that paralyzed transportation along the crucial national route.
In response to the mounting crisis and the tragic fatality, law enforcement agencies mobilized personnel to tackle the situation. Sofiul Islam confirmed that multiple teams of highway police forces were deployed directly to the field, working tirelessly to restore normalcy to vehicle movement and bring the extensive highway traffic jam under full control.
