Parliament's 3rd session begins Thursday with priority on committees
The third session of the national parliament is set to commence on Thursday in Dhaka, featuring the formation of parliamentary committees. Approximately six important bills are expected to be tabled during the upcoming sittings.
The national parliament is preparing to convene for its third session, which is scheduled to begin on Thursday at the Parliament Building in Dhaka. Ahead of the formal commencement, interviews and preparatory discussions took place on Wednesday, setting the stage for what is anticipated to be a focused legislative period under the current administration, which has now reached six months in office.
According to official statements, the formation of various parliamentary committees will be treated as the highest priority during this third session. Authorities confirmed that the relevant committees will be finalized immediately upon receiving the names of nominated members from the opposition parties. While the duration of the current sitting has not been rigidly fixed, officials indicated that it is likely to be a brief session lasting five, seven, or ten days, with the caveat that the timeframe could be extended if parliamentary necessity dictates.
A major focus of the upcoming parliamentary proceedings will be the proposed establishment of a 17-member committee dedicated to constitutional reform. Within the proposed framework for this specific panel, there are provisions to include seven members from the BNP and five members from the Jamat. Highlighting the scale of potential legislative revisions, comparisons were drawn to international frameworks, noting that the Constitution of India has undergone 106 amendments over the past 76 years.
Furthermore, officials emphasized the broad scope of legislative changes, noting that even a minor alteration such as a comma, full stop, or semicolon to the foundational text constitutes a part of comprehensive constitutional reform. Alongside structural reforms, the third session is projected to witness the formal introduction of approximately six critical bills covering diverse legal and societal issues.
Among the anticipated legislative proposals are measures addressing property transfer regulations. Under the planned provisions, even if parents legally sign over and assign property to their children, the parents will retain full rights to the enjoyment, possession, and utilization of that property for the entirety of their lives. This specific initiative is being advanced as a direct measure to prevent neglect toward elderly parents by their children following the transfer of property ownership.
In addition to property transfer regulations, the legislative agenda for the parliamentary sittings is expected to encompass crucial measures concerning enforced disappearances and the protection of fundamental human rights. As the parliament gathers in Dhaka, lawmakers and political stakeholders prepare to debate these pressing legislative priorities and finalize the composition of the newly proposed committees.
