Pankouri Conservation Group Protects Fishing Cats in Chuadanga
The Pankouri organization has rescued and released over 40 fishing cats in Chuadanga over the past decade. Conservation efforts are being conducted in collaboration with Dhaka University and the Arannyk Foundation.
In the Chuadanga district, particularly within Belgachhi village and its surrounding areas under the Jamzami union of Alamdanga, the local organization Pankouri has been actively carrying out conservation and awareness-raising activities dedicated to the protection of the fishing cat. These grassroots environmental efforts focus on safeguarding the local wildlife and educating community members about the ecological importance of preserving these vulnerable wild animals in their natural rural habitats.
Over the past decade, the conservation work spearheaded by Pankouri has achieved significant milestones in wildlife rescue operations. Statistical records from the organization indicate that within this ten-year timeframe, a total of more than forty fishing cats have been successfully rescued through both direct and indirect efforts before being safely released back into the wild.
To strengthen these ongoing wildlife protection initiatives, Pankouri has established collaborative partnerships with several prominent academic and conservation entities. These supporting institutions include the Department of Zoology at Dhaka University, the Arannyk Foundation, and the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division based in Khulna, all working together to address regional conservation challenges.
Contextualizing the pressures facing local wildlife, Muntasir Akash explained that rural bushlands and wetlands were previously far more abundant, providing natural hiding spaces where fishing cats could easily conceal themselves. However, the continuous reduction of these vital natural environments has severely contracted their natural habitats and critical shelter zones.
Akash further elaborated that this environmental degradation has simultaneously triggered a severe food crisis for the species, compelling the animals to venture near fish farms, poultry farms, and human settlements in search of sustenance. Consequently, the frequency of encounters between humans and fishing cats has noticeably increased across the affected localities.
Amid these growing challenges, the continued intervention by Pankouri and its institutional partners remains crucial for mitigating human-wildlife conflicts and ensuring the long-term survival of the fishing cat population within the Chuadanga region.
