Recent research findings and urgent expert warnings have highlighted the severe health risks associated with the practice of 'choking' or neck compression during sexual intercourse. According to experts, engaging in this specific physical behavior is entirely unsafe. The physiological consequences of neck compression during intimacy can lead to extreme medical emergencies, including losing consciousness, permanent damage to the brain, strokes, and even death.

Amid growing concern over the popularity of this practice, comprehensive data regarding its prevalence has emerged from a major study. In 2024, a large-scale survey was conducted focusing on adults aged 18 to 35 years old. The extensive research project gathered responses from a total of 4,702 participants to understand the frequency of these intimate practices among this specific demographic group in regions including Australia and the United States.

The findings of the 2024 survey revealed striking statistics concerning the widespread nature of the behavior. Among the 4,702 participants surveyed, an overwhelming 57 percent reported that they had personally experienced having their neck compressed or being 'choked' during sexual intercourse at some point in their lives. Furthermore, 51 percent of the respondents stated that they had actively subjected their sexual partners to neck compression.

In addition to these figures, the survey data demonstrated a significant overlap in behavior among the respondents. Specifically, 43.9 percent of the participants reported that they had experienced both sides of the action—meaning they had both been choked by a partner and had choked a partner during sexual encounters. These numbers underscore how normative the practice has become within contemporary dating and intimate relationships.

Experts have expressed deep concern that the widespread normalization of the practice stands in stark contrast to the severe dangers involved. Professor Heather Douglas from Melbourne Law School pointed out a critical disconnect in perception. She stated that many young adults mistakenly believe this behavior is safe and enhances their sexual enjoyment, yet they remain largely unaware of the true and severe health risks associated with it.
