Nari Sanghati Unveils Five-Point Charter for Women’s Rights in Dhaka
Nari Sanghati has put forward a five-point charter of demands at Dhaka University to establish women's dignity and rights. The organisation announced long-term programmes to challenge patriarchal discrimination and misleading statistics.
Nari Sanghati has officially presented a comprehensive five-point charter of demands aimed at establishing the dignity and rights of women in Bangladesh. The announcement was made during a public rally organised at the Soparjito Swadhinata Chattar, located on the campus of Dhaka University in Dhaka on 28 August.
The event witnessed the participation of numerous notable figures and representatives from various organisations, including Aparajita Chanda, Taslima Akhter, Dewan Abdur Rashid Nilu, Warda Ashraf, Abul Hasan Rubel, Mahin Sultan, Nazma Begum, Farhana Mannan, Aklima Akhter, Farhana Manik Muna, Dr. Shyamoli Shill, Monir Uddin Pappu, Hasan Maruf Rumi, Mahrukh Mohiuddin, Nadira Yasmin, Sima Das Sima, and Nahida Jahan. Representatives from organisations such as Nari Sanghati, Bangladesh Garment Sramik Sanghati, Ganosamhati Andolan (GSA), BIGD, Kishani Sabha, Shoishob, and Chhatra Federation were also present at the gathering.
Addressing the rally, Aparajita Chanda strongly criticised the prevailing narrative surrounding gender equality, stating that glamorous statistics are being used to conceal the real situation of women in Bangladesh. Chanda asserted that such tactics create public confusion and serve as an attempt to preserve a patriarchal and discriminatory system. In this context, she announced that Nari Sanghati is taking to the streets with specific five-point demands through a long-term programme.
The newly proposed five-point charter highlights crucial structural reforms, which include ensuring thirty-three percent women legislators, implementing affordable and quality day-care services nationwide by the year 2030, and reinstating sixty percent women teachers in primary education.
Echoing the sentiments of the rally, Dewan Abdur Rashid Nilu emphasized that establishing women's civic dignity is the primary prerequisite when considering broader social and economic interests. Nilu further stated that to successfully implement these five-point demands, other political forces alongside women's organisations must play an equal role in the ongoing struggle.
