Murder Accused Assaulted at Narayanganj Court Over Bulbul Killing
Eleven individuals have been arrested following the assault and harassment of murder accused Sheikh Sifat at the Narayanganj Court on Sunday. A court has granted remand for the suspects as reactions and security concerns surround the incident.
On Sunday, a tense situation unfolded at the Narayanganj Court premises when a murder accused, identified as Sheikh Sifat, was subjected to a physical assault and harassment while being escorted into the judicial building. The incident occurred during proceedings related to the murder case of Bulbul, a leader of the Islami Jubo Andolan in Narayanganj's Bandar area, which has drawn significant public and political attention.
In connection with the violence and the underlying murder case, law enforcement authorities arrested a total of eleven individuals. Following their apprehension, the accused were presented before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Nurul Huda Chowdhury, where prosecutors formally prayed for a ten-day remand to facilitate further questioning and investigation into the circumstances of the crimes.
Upon reviewing the police petition and the case details, the court issued significant judicial orders. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Nurul Huda Chowdhury granted a ten-day remand for seven of the arrested suspects, while four women among the detained group were ordered to be placed on a three-day remand for interrogation.
Legal records and official documents concerning the suspects reveal multiple prior criminal cases. Specifically, the primary murder accused, Sheikh Sifat, faces fourteen previous cases, while another individual named White Jummun is implicated in nine pending cases. Additionally, court records show that four separate cases involving Riyad are currently under active adjudication within the judicial system.
The courtroom altercation and the subsequent handling of the suspects drew sharp criticism from prominent local figures. Expressing strong disapproval over the security breach, Rafiur Rabbi stated that attacking an accused person inside the court is completely unacceptable, questioning the current state of the judicial system and arguing that the collapse witnessed during Sheikh Hasina's tenure remains unchanged.
Defending the security operations and addressing the chaos, Hasinuzzaman explained that adequate security measures had indeed been deployed at the location. He noted that relatives, well-wishers, and political colleagues of the slain Bulbul were present, leading to a volatile situation, though he maintained that stripping incidents did not occur and that the entire operational pressure fell upon the police force.
Meanwhile, Mufti Masum Billah offered an explanation regarding the immediate provocation behind the assault by activists from organizations including Islami Andolan and Islami Jubo Andolan. He remarked that the provocative gestures made by Sifat following his arrest angered their workers, leading to the sudden and unintended clash, which he conceded should not have happened.
