Munshiganj Dengue Crisis Deepens as Infections Surge Across Upazilas

The dengue situation in Munshiganj has taken a severe turn as the number of affected patients continues to rise across the region. According to official data from the Civil Surgeon's Office, the total number of dengue infections recorded in the district from the beginning of the year up to August 24 has reached 1,509. Among these total cases, Munshiganj General Hospital alone has registered 1,277 patient admissions. Authorities have confirmed that one person has died from dengue at the Munshiganj General Hospital.

During the first 24 days of August alone, a total of 626 new dengue cases have been recorded across the six upazilas of the district. Within the month of August up to August 24, a staggering 533 patients were admitted exclusively to the Munshiganj General Hospital. Additionally, breakdown figures across various local health facilities during this recent timeframe indicate that the Tongibari Upazila Health Complex admitted 31 patients, the Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex recorded 17 patients, the Sirajdikhan Upazila Health Complex saw 16 patients, the Louhajang Upazila Health Complex treated 5 patients, and the Gazaria Upazila Health Complex admitted 24 patients.

Hospital admission metrics over a recent 24-hour period further illustrate the ongoing pressure on local medical infrastructure, with an additional 38 individuals hospitalized for dengue. Specifically, the Sadar General Hospital logged 31 new admissions during this timeframe, alongside 5 new patients in Tongibari and 1 patient in Sreenagar. Currently, 68 patients remain admitted specifically at the Munshiganj Sadar Hospital, while 55 individuals have received clearance to return home after recovering. Beyond the dengue caseload, medical facilities are also managing other seasonal illnesses, with 10 patients currently admitted to the hospital suffering from diarrhea.

Detailed monthly statistics provided by Dr. Fahmida Lasker reveal the progression of the outbreak at the Munshiganj General Hospital, where a total of 1,413 dengue patients have been admitted throughout 2026. The breakdown by month shows 11 admissions in January, 5 in February, 4 in March, 39 in April, 35 in May, 151 in June, 495 in July, and a sharp escalation to 582 admissions during the month of August. Commenting on the ongoing public health challenge, Dr. Sajeda Begum stated that medical treatment and surveillance by the health department are continuing to maintain control over the situation, while strongly advising citizens not to neglect fevers and to seek prompt medical advice and undergo dengue testing.
