Microsoft Unveils Xbox Disc-to-Digital Feature to Convert Physical Games

Microsoft has officially announced a new disc-to-digital feature designed to allow Xbox owners to seamlessly convert their physical game collections into digital copies. The major gaming announcement details a system where players can claim a digital entitlement simply by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game.

According to Jason Ronald, the feature is launching with substantial backing. Ronald noted that "most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support this new feature," giving players widespread compatibility from the very beginning of the rollout. Furthermore, Microsoft confirmed that "we’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time."

The physical disc will not be rendered useless once the conversion takes place. Microsoft clarified how the dual-format functionality works, stating that players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, users can experience the benefits of digital, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported, while the physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.

Testing for this long-awaited capability is slated to begin very soon. Xbox Insiders are scheduled to get early access to the disc-to-digital feature starting on August 31, 2026, allowing them to test out the thousands of supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X titles at launch.

This transition toward digital-first ecosystems comes at a time when industry competitors are making drastic changes to physical media formats. Notably, Sony previously announced it will end production of physical PlayStation game discs after January 2028, placing Microsoft's new hybrid physical-to-digital bridging tool in a unique position within the current gaming landscape.
