Experts and international organizations have raised serious concerns regarding seismic and marine hazards across the Mediterranean basin. According to official data from UNESCO, the probability of a tsunami wave exceeding one meter in the Mediterranean in the next 30 years is close to 100 percent. This alarming forecast places coastal populations, particularly along the French Riviera and the city of Nice, under heightened scrutiny as authorities evaluate regional vulnerabilities.

Historical records demonstrate that the Mediterranean region is no stranger to such destructive marine events. Between the 16th century and the early 2000s, there were roughly 20 reported tsunami events along the French Riviera alone. Among the significant historical precedents is a powerful earthquake in the Ligurian Sea on February 23, 1887, which had an estimated magnitude between 6.5 and 6.8.

More recent history also underscores the tangible nature of these coastal threats. On October 16, 1979, a construction site collapse in Nice triggered a localized landslide and subsequent tsunami that tragically resulted in eight deaths. Additionally, seismic activity outside the immediate local coastline has demonstrated the capacity to impact French shores, as seen when the Boumerdès earthquake in Algeria on May 21, 2003, generated tsunami effects that reached the French Riviera approximately 75 minutes later.

Globally, the threat posed by these seismic sea waves remains severe. Tributes and historical loss-of-life assessments indicate that tsunamis have killed over 250,000 people globally since 1970, reinforcing the critical importance of preparedness, research, and rapid alert dissemination for vulnerable coastal zones and metropolitan areas.

To mitigate these ongoing risks, France operates its national tsunami warning center, known as Cenalt, which has been actively monitoring marine and seismic threats since July 2012. Alongside international scientific bodies like Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, warning centers like Cenalt play a vital role in providing timely information to protect populations along the Mediterranean basin from impending natural disasters.
