Measles situation becomes more alarming, deaths exceed 870
The death toll from measles and measles-like rashes in Bangladesh has risen to 873, with 6 more deaths and 988 new suspected cases identified in the last 24 hours.
An alarming situation has emerged in the country regarding measles and measles-like symptoms. Six more people have died in the last 24 hours. As a result, the combined number of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths this year has risen to 873.
This information was revealed in the latest statistics from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday (August 9). The six new deaths have been listed as suspected measles deaths.
Suspected deaths are higher
According to the DGHS, out of a total of 873 deaths, 775 deaths are considered suspected measles. Meanwhile, the number of laboratory-confirmed measles deaths is 98.
This means that while a large portion of those infected exhibited measles-like symptoms, not all deaths have been classified as confirmed measles deaths through testing.
988 new suspected cases in a single day
In the last 24 hours, 988 new suspected measles cases have been reported in the country. This has increased the total number of such suspected patients to 1 lakh 36 thousand 320.
During the same period, measles was detected in another 75 people through laboratory tests. Consequently, the number of confirmed measles cases this year has reached 17 thousand 115.
Over one lakh hospitalized
According to DGHS data, 1 lakh 18 thousand 382 people have received treatment in various hospitals across the country for measles-like symptoms since March 15.
Among them, 1 lakh 14 thousand 142 people have recovered and been discharged from the hospital.
Strengthening vaccination programs
The government has strengthened vaccination programs to control the spread of measles. According to health authorities, more than 1 crore 84 lakh children have been brought under the vaccination coverage since April 5.
According to experts, regular vaccination is crucial to prevent measles. Additionally, it is essential to quickly identify infected individuals and bring them under necessary treatment and surveillance.
In this situation of widespread infection and deaths across the country, emphasis is being placed on ensuring vaccination for children, as well as seeking medical advice immediately if measles-like symptoms such as fever and rashes appear.
