Lessons on Humane Treatment of Animals from the Life of the Prophet
Prophet Muhammad taught valuable lessons on kindness, compassion, and proper care toward animals. Various historical accounts detail his strict guidance on avoiding animal cruelty, providing adequate sustenance, and ensuring gentle treatment.
The life and teachings of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) provide profound lessons regarding the humane treatment of animals, emphasizing deep compassion, mercy, and proper care toward all living creatures. Throughout his teachings, he consistently instructed his followers to be kind and responsible caretakers of animals, ensuring their physical well-being is never neglected under human custody.
Highlighting the fundamental rights of domesticated beasts of burden, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) specifically addressed the necessity of keeping them properly fed and rested. In a recorded directive, he explicitly stated regarding silent animals: 'Fear Allah regarding these voiceless animals. Keep them well-fed and healthy so they remain strong, ride upon healthy animals when traveling, and consume the meat of healthy animals when eating.' This teaching underscores a continuous commitment to the welfare and vitality of livestock.
Specific incidents recorded in traditional sources, such as those narrated in Abu Dahu and Al-Adab al-Mufrad, further illustrate the Prophet's strict oversight regarding animal rights and suffering. On one occasion addressing an emaciated camel, he directly questioned its owner: 'Do you not fear Allah regarding this animal which He has placed in your possession? It has complained to me that you keep it hungry and place heavy burdens upon it, causing it to become exhausted.' In a separate ruling regarding bodily maltreatment, he declared that God curses anyone who brands an animal on the face or strikes it on the face, emphasizing that facial marking and physical blows are strictly forbidden.
The Prophet's compassion extended universally across the animal kingdom, encompassing even the smallest creatures and wildlife. During an incident where an anthill was burned with fire, he firmly intervened, stating that the right to punish with fire belongs exclusively to the Lord of fire. In another notable account concerning motherhood in birds, upon seeing distressed birds he asked, 'Who has distressed this bird with its chicks? Return its chicks to it.'
Further ethical guidelines established by the Prophet prohibit the exploitation of wildlife and cruel practices. He explicitly stated that wrongfully seized property is unlawful, the consumption of meat from fanged predatory animals is unlawful, and turning any living creature into a target for sport or practice is strictly prohibited.
Finally, concerning the necessity of minimizing distress during necessary procedures, the Prophet emphasized absolute mercy and precision. He stated: 'Verily, Allah has prescribed Ihsan (excellence and good treatment) in all things. So when you kill, kill well, and when you slaughter, slaughter well. Let each of you sharpen his blade and give relief to his animal.' These comprehensive teachings collectively establish a timeless framework of universal mercy, responsibility, and empathy toward all living creations.
