Large Hilsa Caught in Meghna River Sells for 8,500 Taka in Bhola
A large Hilsa fish weighing nearly two kilograms was caught in the Meghna River and sold at an open auction on Monday. Local traders gathered at the Ramnewaz fish ghat in Monpura upazila as the catch went to the highest bidder.
A remarkably large Hilsa fish, weighing nearly two kilograms, was successfully caught in the waters of the Meghna River on Monday, drawing significant local attention in Monpura upazila of Bhola district. The substantial catch was brought ashore to the Ramnewaz fish ghat, a prominent local hub for riverine trade, where residents and traders gathered to witness the proceedings.
Following its arrival at the riverbank, the fish was put up for sale at an open auction held at Bachchu Chowdhury's fish arat. The competitive bidding reflected the high demand for oversized specimens of the prized national fish, ultimately culminating in a final auction price of 8,500 taka.
Local fish trader Firoz Majhi emerged as the successful buyer during the open auction, securing the nearly two-kilogram Hilsa. Following the purchase, Firoz Majhi outlined plans to transport the valuable specimen northward, intending to send it directly to Karwan Bazar in Dhaka for resale.
The event highlights the fluctuating nature of the current fishing season on the river. Jayanta Kumar noted that it is currently the peak season for Hilsa, though fish are not always caught in equal amounts. Describing the capture of such a large Hilsa as a positive development, Kumar added that an increase in rainfall ahead could lead to schools of Hilsa being caught in greater numbers.
This impressive catch follows a similar occurrence just days prior in the same region. Notably, another large Hilsa had previously been caught and sold for 9,000 taka last Thursday at the location, underscoring the occasional presence of exceptionally large fish in the local river waters.
