A two-day long journalists' workshop titled 'Front-of-Package Labelling (FOPL) in Bangladesh: Necessity, Progress, and Way Forward' was recently held at the BIP Conference Room in the capital. The event, which took place on August 24 and 25, brought together twenty-six journalists representing print, television, and online media outlets to discuss crucial public health matters. The workshop was supported by PROGGA (Pragati Jonno Gyan) and the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), in cooperation with organizations including Samakal, Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, BRAC James P. Grant School of Public Health, Channel 24, and the Anti Tobacco Media Alliance (ATMA).

During the sessions, discussions highlighted the growing burden of health crises in the country, noting that seventy-one percent of all deaths are caused by non-communicable diseases. Experts emphasized that implementing effective labeling measures is vital for public awareness and disease prevention. Abu Ahmed Shamim stated that Front-of-Package Labelling is a scientifically proven method for preventing non-communicable diseases, adding that it will help consumers easily understand the health risks associated with ultra-processed foods.

Addressing the participants, Muhammad Ruhul Quddus stressed that the rapid finalization and implementation of the FOPL regulations are crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals related to reducing premature deaths from non-communicable diseases by one-third. Zahirul Alam further noted that regular discussions and analyses in the media highlighting the effectiveness of FOPL in combating non-communicable diseases will help pave the way for the finalization of the draft regulations.

Providing an update on the regulatory status, Professor Dr. Mohammad Shoaib informed attendees that the draft regulation is currently at the Ministry of Food. He expressed optimism that the regulation will be finalized swiftly after all necessary procedures are completed. The workshop featured insights and moderation from various prominent figures, including Mizan Chowdhury, ABM Zubair, Hasan Shahriar, and Shabnam Mostofa, alongside the participating journalists and speakers.
