An innocent man who suffered wrongful imprisonment due to a severe identity complication has finally been released from the Cox's Bazar District Jail. Sona Mia walked free following an official order issued by Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahim, who stipulated four specific conditions for his release from custody.
The grave error came to light largely due to the vigilance of Jailer Md. Delowar Jahan. According to Jahan, the collaborative efforts of various authorities successfully saved an innocent person from facing a confirmed death sentence. The mix-up began the moment Sona Mia arrived at the prison facility.
Jailer Md. Delowar Jahan recounted that during the initial roll call inside the prison, Sona Mia inquired about the specific crime for which he had been detained. Upon being informed that he was arrested as a death row inmate, Mia expressed profound astonishment and confusion regarding the charges.
Prompted by this confusion, prison officials examined photographs, personal identities, and other recorded details from older case documents, which ultimately revealed major discrepancies when compared to Mia's actual information. Once this alarming mismatch was formally brought to the attention of the court, a thorough investigation was immediately initiated.
Investigators uncovered that an individual named Ramzan Ali had fraudulently used Sona Mia's identity to secure bail in a narcotics case involving 190,000 Yaba pills before going into hiding. Reflecting on the harrowing ordeal while behind bars, Jailer Jahan noted that every single moment inside the facility felt like an entire day, and every day felt as long as a grueling year to the wrongfully imprisoned man.
