On Thursday, August 27, the Kathmandu-based international mountain development organization ICIMOD issued an urgent and critical warning regarding the looming threat of sudden flash floods and ice avalanches in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region. The alert highlights the extreme environmental vulnerabilities currently facing communities situated near the border shared by Nepal and China, where changing climatic conditions continue to elevate the risks of catastrophic natural disasters.
This heightened state of alert follows a dangerous hydrological event that occurred on August 26. According to the documented timeline, river water levels began to rise rapidly and unexpectedly at approximately 9:00 AM local time within the Bhote Koshi basin, catching local populations and observers by surprise and demonstrating the volatile nature of the region's water systems.
The physical impact of the sudden surge was dramatic and immediate as it traveled downstream. In Galchi, the water level of the Trishuli River experienced an alarming and massive increase of approximately 9 meters in the span of just 30 minutes, illustrating the sheer force and velocity of the water displacement.
The destructive wave continued its rapid progression, subsequently reaching Malekhu. At this location, hydrological measurements recorded a significant rise in water height of approximately 7 meters, further threatening infrastructure and riverside areas along the path of the swollen basin.
