Heavy Rains and Mountain Runoff Flood Dighinala Roads and Crops
Torrential rains and mountain runoff have submerged low-lying areas and roads in Khagrachhari's Dighinala upazila, halting vehicular movement. Local residents are facing significant transport disruptions as bridges and major thoroughfares go underwater.
Heavy continuous rainfall combined with an aggressive upstream mountain runoff has triggered severe flooding across multiple low-lying regions within the Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhari, Bangladesh. The extreme weather event, recorded on August 29, 2026, directly targeted and impacted several vulnerable communities, notably within the Merung and Kabakhali unions.
The rising water levels have created treacherous conditions for local travelers and commuters attempting to navigate the affected sectors. Specifically, areas situated near the large Merung steel bridge experienced extreme inundation, with floodwaters rising dramatically between three to four feet. This massive accumulation of water has completely submerged the adjacent roadway, rendering vehicular transit impossible.
Consequently, long-distance transportation has ground to a halt, severely disrupting the vital Longudu road corridor. Local residents attempting to travel along this route found themselves entirely stranded by the deep waters. Supon Chakma, a local commuter caught in the disruption, described his experience trying to navigate the morning floods: "I left this morning with my motorcycle to head towards Maini. Upon arriving near the large Merung steel bridge, I saw that the road had become completely submerged in water. There is no opportunity to proceed with a motorcycle. Now, there is no other way except to cross using a boat."
The transportation grid suffered further setbacks along the Dighinala-Sajek roadway, particularly near the Kabakhali stadium area. In this specific zone, relentless flooding caused water to accumulate directly over the driving surface, reaching depths of one to two feet and posing continued hazards to any attempted movement.
Amidst the growing infrastructure challenges and localized inundation of agricultural lands and roadways, local administrative authorities have closely monitored the situation. Dighinala Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tanzil Parভেজ provided an official assessment of the flooding prospects, indicating that if additional precipitation does not occur, the accumulated floodwaters are expected to recede completely within the span of just a few hours.
