The demonstrators took to the streets, effectively blocking local roads, and surrounded both the local police station and the Upazila Health Complex to voice their outrage over the handling of the incident.
The controversy first came to light late at night on August 26, 2026. At midnight, a pickup truck loaded with expired government pharmaceutical supplies from the Ghatail Upazila Health Complex was intercepted by vigilant members of the public while an attempt was being made to dump the entire stock into the Jamuna River.
Following the public interception, legal action was initiated late at night on August 27, 2026. Dr. Abu Nayim Mohammad Sohel, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, formally filed a case as the plaintiff in connection with the seized expired government medicines.
However, the decision to target lower-level personnel sparked immediate public backlash. Instead of prosecuting the primary masterminds behind the expired medicine scandal, the case resulted in the arrest of the pickup truck driver, Azmat, who was subsequently sent to jail on the afternoon of August 28.
Refusing to accept the shifting of blame onto the driver, angry community members organized sweeping demonstrations on August 29. The protesters gathered in large numbers to surround the Ghatail Upazila Health Complex and the local police station, demanding that the true masterminds and key culprits behind the expired medicine scheme be brought to justice.
