French Riviera Faces High Tsunami Risk as Experts Urge Preparedness
UNESCO warns that the probability of a tsunami wave exceeding one meter in the Mediterranean within the next 30 years is close to 100 percent. Authorities across the region are focusing on historical risks and warning systems to protect vulnerable coastal populations.

Authorities and international organizations are placing renewed focus on tsunami preparedness and risk assessment along the French Riviera and the broader Mediterranean basin during 2024. According to evaluations from UNESCO, the probability of a tsunami wave exceeding one meter in the Mediterranean in the next 30 years is close to 100 percent. This stark assessment highlights the ongoing vulnerability of densely populated coastal areas situated along the Mediterranean Sea.
Historically, the French Riviera has experienced numerous marine hazards, with roughly 20 reported tsunami events occurring between the 16th century and the early 2000s. Among the notable historical occurrences is the significant earthquake in the Ligurian Sea on February 23, 1887, which featured an estimated magnitude between 6.5 and 6.8. More recently, a construction site collapse in Nice caused a landslide and tsunami resulting in eight deaths on October 16, 1979.
Distant seismic events can also pose a direct threat to the French coastline. For instance, the Boumerdès earthquake in Algeria on May 21, 2003, generated tsunami effects that reached the French Riviera about 75 minutes later, demonstrating how quickly marine disturbances can traverse the Mediterranean basin and impact local shores.
Globally, the hazard is underscored by significant loss of life, with tsunamis having claimed tributes over 250,000 people globally since 1970. These sobering international figures reinforce the critical need for robust monitoring, public awareness, and early warning infrastructure in vulnerable regions like Nice and the wider French Riviera.
To mitigate these risks, France operates its national tsunami warning center, known as the Centre d'alerte aux tsunamis (Cenalt). Cenalt has been actively monitoring seismic and marine activities since it became operational in July 2012. Collaborating with specialized bodies such as Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, warning centers like Cenalt play a vital role in detecting underwater disturbances and issuing timely alerts to protect lives along the Mediterranean coast.
