A devastating flash flood has struck the border region of Rasuwa in Nepal, leaving at least 16 people dead and approximately 500 individuals missing, according to reports. The catastrophic event unfolded along the Bhote Koshi River, causing widespread destruction and triggering an urgent search and rescue operation in the affected Himalayan areas.
The disaster occurred on August 26, impacting communities situated near the transboundary river systems connecting Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Authorities and local media organizations, including Kantipur TV and Dhaka Post, have been closely following the unfolding emergency as rescue teams struggle to reach the hardest-hit zones to locate the hundreds of missing persons.
According to preliminary investigations shared by Rizan Bhakta from Kathmandu University, multiple compounding natural factors contributed to the sudden deluge. Experts received critical information indicating that a massive ice avalanche occurred on the Nepal side of the border, which severely blocked the Lende River before the catastrophic downstream flooding was unleashed.
Compounding the perilous conditions in the high-altitude terrain, a seismic event was simultaneously recorded in the region. Rizan Bhakta confirmed that a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck Tibet around the same time as the ice avalanche, raising serious concerns among geologists and disaster management officials regarding secondary hazards in the fragile mountain ecosystem.
As emergency services continue their grim work along the Rasuwa and Bhote Koshi river basins, the death toll of 16 remains provisional given the vast scale of the disaster. With nearly 500 people still unaccounted for, families and local authorities await further updates from ongoing rescue efforts in the remote border terrain.
