Floods in Nepal and Tibet Leave Hundreds Dead and Thousands Missing
Severe flooding across Nepal and Tibet has resulted in numerous casualties, with hundreds of deaths confirmed by Thursday afternoon. Authorities report that citizens from at least 35 countries are among the missing as rescue efforts continue.
Recent devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet have triggered a massive humanitarian crisis, leaving widespread destruction, numerous fatalities, and a staggering number of missing individuals in their wake. According to official reports and news agencies including AFP, Reuters, the BBC, and Xinhua, the disaster has severely impacted the region, prompting intensive responses from local and international organizations.
By Thursday afternoon at 5:30 PM, the death toll from the floods had reached a confirmed 335 people. This total comprises 332 fatalities recorded within Nepal and three deaths reported in Tibet. Local recovery operations have uncovered bodies across multiple districts in Nepal, with Chitwan reporting 108 recovered bodies, East Nawalparasi registering 62, and Dhading finding 27. Additional recoveries include 20 in Gorkha, 17 in Rasuwa, 15 in West Nawalparasi, 12 in Nuwakot, and nine in Tanahun.
The scale of the missing persons crisis is vast, with conflicting global tallies provided by major news agencies. Information from AFP indicates that a total of 1,381 people are missing, while Reuters estimates the number of missing individuals to be nearly 1,500. Furthermore, a report from Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority states that 826 people remain unaccounted for, while figures for Tibet note 558 missing individuals alongside two people who have been successfully rescued.
The tragedy has a profound international dimension, with citizens from at least 35 different countries listed as missing amid the disaster. The affected foreign nationals include 178 from India, 127 from Nepal, 100 from China, 64 from the United States, 53 from Ukraine, 50 from Malaysia, 34 from Australia, 33 from the United Kingdom, 25 from Canada, nine each from South Korea and Singapore, eight each from Germany and Russia, six each from South Africa and Latvia, and five each from Japan and New Zealand.
Additional missing foreign nationals comprise four individuals each from France and Spain, three from Belgium, two each from Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy, Ireland, Kazakhstan, and Hungary, and one individual each from Belarus, Bulgaria, Finland, Israel, Lithuania, the Philippines, Serbia, Sweden, and Switzerland. Concurrently, specialized organizations such as the Trekkers Society have reported 77 missing, Kailash Journey has 26 missing, and Richa Tours and Travels has recorded eight missing.
