Father and son sentenced to prison in Chattogram illegal wealth case
A Chattogram court has sentenced a former union parishad member and his father to prison in an illegal wealth case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission. Both defendants were absent when the verdict was delivered.
A special tribunal in Chattogram has delivered a significant ruling in a long-standing corruption case, sentencing a former local government representative and his father to prison terms. The judgment was handed down by Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Moqaram Hossain, who presided over the proceedings and formally pronounced the judicial outcome based on the evidence and legal arguments presented before the court.
The primary defendant in the case is Md. Abdullah, who previously served as a member of the Teknaf Sadar Union Parishad in Cox's Bazar district. For his involvement in acquiring illegal wealth, the former local official has been handed a prison sentence of four years by the presiding judge.
Alongside the former union parishad member, his father, Abul Bashar, was also implicated and convicted in the same judicial proceedings. The court sentenced the elder Bashar to a prison term of three years for his role in the accumulation of the disputed assets.
The legal proceedings that culminated in these prison sentences were initiated by the Anti-Corruption Commission, commonly known as the ACC, which investigated the financial irregularities and subsequently brought charges against the two men. Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented its case to the tribunal, detailing the findings of the anti-corruption agency's investigation.
Notably, when the presiding judge formally announced the verdict on August 20, 2026, neither of the convicted individuals was present in the courtroom. Both Md. Abdullah and his father Abul Bashar remained absent while the judicial decision regarding their prison sentences was being delivered.
