Farmers Take Fertilizer From Warehouse Amid Crisis in Kurigram

On August 23, a significant incident unfolded in the Shilkuri union of Bhurungamari upazila, Kurigram, where local farmers took 198 sacks of fertilizer directly from a dealer's warehouse. According to the verified reports, this action occurred despite the dealer claiming that the storage facility was completely empty.

Investigations and ground-level observations revealed a stark contradiction regarding the availability of the vital agricultural input. Even though the official warehouse was declared empty by the dealer, fertilizer was surprisingly still being sold openly in the local market, albeit at significantly higher prices, leaving the distressed farmers with very few alternatives to sustain their crops.

This localized confrontation in Kurigram is part of a much broader and severe nationwide crisis concerning fertilizer shortages and escalating public frustration. The scarcity of essential agricultural supplies has severely impacted farming communities across various regions, triggering widespread anger and a strong pushback from the affected agrarian population.

Amidst the escalating nationwide discontent regarding the acute fertilizer shortages, the Bangladesh Socialist Party recently organized a public rally at Pipulbaria Bazar. The primary demands voiced during this organized gathering included the immediate assurance of stable fertilizer supplies and a definitive end to the ongoing, disruptive electricity crises plaguing the country.

However, the situation turned turbulent when allegations emerged that the peaceful rally organized by the Bangladesh Socialist Party at Pipulbaria Bazar faced a violent attack. Such demonstrations recall historical tensions over agrarian rights in the region, echoing past tragedies such as the 1995 police shootings in Gobindaganj upazila's Mahiganj, Gaibandha, where farmers lost their lives while protesting for fair prices and rightful access to essential fertilizers.
