Faridpur Husband Sentenced to Death for Dowry Murder of Happy Begum
A Faridpur tribunal has sentenced a man named Rakib to death for the 2015 dowry-related murder of his wife, Happy Begum. The verdict was delivered by judge Shamima Parveen following an investigation that led to a chargesheet in 2017.
A court in Faridpur has handed down a death sentence to a husband convicted of killing his wife over dowry demands in a case that dates back nearly five years. The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Faridpur delivered the landmark verdict on August 30, holding the husband, Rakib, directly responsible for the tragic death of his wife, Happy Begum.
According to the case details, the horrific incident took place on May 5, 2015. On that fateful day, Happy Begum was subjected to severe physical torture over demands for a dowry that reportedly included five lakh taka and a motorcycle. The brutal abuse ultimately resulted in her death, plunging her family into deep grief and triggering a formal legal battle for justice.
Following the murder, the victim's grieving father, Humayun Sheikh, stepped forward to seek legal redress. He lodged a murder case at the Kotwali Police Station against the accused, initiating a thorough law enforcement investigation into the circumstances surrounding his daughter's violent death inside the marital home.
The police investigation made significant progress when Sub-Inspector Md. Humayun Sheikh formally submitted the chargesheet in the case on July 8, 2017, after gathering sufficient evidence implicating the husband. The legal proceedings eventually culminated in the courtroom of judge Shamima Parveen, who presided over the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
Legal experts and advocates have welcomed the stern judicial outcome, emphasizing its potential deterrent effect on similar crimes in the region. Advocate Golam Rabbani Khan Ratan remarked on the significance of the ruling, stating that such exemplary punishment will play a major role in curbing societal tendencies toward violence against women and dowry-related offenses.
