Ex-BGB Officer Weeps Over Legal Fees at Bangladesh Tribunal
Former BGB officer Lt Col Mohammad Redowanul Islam broke down in tears at the International Crimes Tribunal on Thursday. He cited financial distress regarding legal fees and family expenses in a crimes against humanity case.
Former Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officer Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Redowanul Islam wept during proceedings at the International Crimes Tribunal-1 in Dhaka. The emotional outburst occurred while he was addressing the court regarding his legal representation, financial distress, and the challenges of managing both lawyer fees and his household expenses.
Lieutenant Colonel Redowanul Islam is an accused individual in a crimes against humanity case. The charges against him stem from incidents that occurred during the July mass uprising in the Rampura and Banasree areas of the capital.
During the tribunal proceedings, the accused addressed the court regarding the scheduling of court dates. He stated, “If dates are given frequently, I face problems. If dates are given frequently, I cannot pay the lawyer. Financially, I have no savings or anything else. Consequently, if dates are given frequently, should I give the salary money to the lawyer or run my family?”
In response to his concerns, the tribunal addressed the financial and scheduling dilemma. The court remarked to him, “If you finish the case by giving frequent dates, you will not have to spend behind the lawyer.”
Highlighting the emotional impact of the courtroom scene, observations noted during the session captured the stark reality of the proceedings. Describing the moment, a statement noted, “He (Redowanul) burst into crying. Saying, ‘I cannot manage. Shall I run the family or pay the lawyer's fee?’ This has touched my heart.”
Following the proceedings, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 has set the next date for the case. The tribunal scheduled the upcoming hearing for the next testimony collection on September 2.
