Dhaka University launches international Haor flood early warning project
Dhaka University has officially inaugurated an international research project aimed at improving flood early warning systems in the Haor region. The initiative is funded jointly by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Japan Science and Technology Agency.
An international research initiative officially titled the 'Haor Flood Early Warning System Development Project' has been launched at Dhaka University. The newly inaugurated collaborative project focuses on advancing technical and meteorological preparations for early flood detection in the vulnerable Haor region.
The high-profile inauguration ceremony at Dhaka University was graced by Professor Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam, who attended the event as the chief guest to formally open the international research endeavor.
Financial backing for this extensive research project is being provided through funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), highlighting strong bilateral cooperation in disaster management research.
A wide consortium of academic institutions, international universities, and specialized Bangladeshi state bodies are linked to the broader context of the initiative. Participating Japanese higher education institutions include Kagawa University, Kyoto University, University of Tokyo, Kochi University, and other academic partners alongside the primary funding agencies.
Domestically, the collaborative framework involves key national organizations such as the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, the Bangladesh Water Development Board, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the Department of Disaster Management, Sparso, the Survey of Bangladesh, and the Institute of Water Modeling, alongside prominent researchers like Professor Dr. Toru Terao, Professor Dr. Taichi Hayashi, Professor Dr. Kiguchi Masashi, Dr. Md. Rezonul Islam Fahim, and Dr. Fatima Akhter.
