Dhaka Stocks Extend Fall to Sixth Day as Turnover Hits Three-Month Low
Bangladesh capital market experienced a continuous decline for the sixth consecutive trading session on August 19, 2026. Dhaka Stock Exchange recorded its lowest turnover in three months alongside a drop in the main index.

The capital markets of Bangladesh witnessed a persistent downward trend on August 19, 2026, marking the sixth consecutive trading session of price drops. Investors across the country continued to navigate a bearish sentiment, leading to subdued activity on both the Dhaka Stock Exchange and the Chittagong Stock Exchange.
At the Dhaka Stock Exchange, the primary price index, known as the DSEXX, dropped by 3 points to settle at 5,769 points. This latest decline contributes to a broader downward movement that has seen the DSE's main price index lose a cumulative 133 points over the course of the six-day losing streak.
Alongside the falling index, market liquidity experienced a significant contraction. Total turnover on the Dhaka bourse plummeted to 732 crore 83 lakh taka on August 19. This represents a sharp drop compared to the previous trading session, when transactions totaled 998 crore 10 lakh taka, meaning that single-day turnover decreased by 265 crore 27 lakh taka.
This substantial reduction in trading volume brought turnover down to its lowest level in three months. Specifically, market statistics indicate that not since May 19 has the Dhaka Stock Exchange seen such low transaction figures, when turnover stood at 675 crore 73 lakh taka.
Individual company shares also saw heavy trading activity amidst the broader market stagnation. Notably, Sharp Industries led the turnover charts with shares worth 22 crore 13 lakh taka changing hands, followed closely by IPDC Finance at 21 crore 51 lakh taka, Beximco at 18 crore 89 lakh taka, alongside participation from Runner Automobile, Envoy Textile, Dominate Steel Building, Samorita Hospital, Saiham Textile, Summit Alliance Port, and Malek Spinning.
Meanwhile, the other indices on the Dhaka bourse presented a mixed performance. The DSE-30 index decreased by 1 point to fall to 2,161 points, whereas the DSE Shariah index managed a marginal gain, rising by 0.94 points to stand at 1,151 points.
A similar negative trend was mirrored at the port city's bourse. The overall CASPI price index of the Chittagong Stock Exchange declined by 19 points. Furthermore, trading activity on the CSE dropped sharply, with total transactions reaching 37 crore 31 lakh taka, down from 73 crore 22 lakh taka recorded in the previous trading session.
