Commuter Train Attacked With Stones in Gopalganj After Harassment Dispute
A Dhaka-bound commuter train was attacked with stones at Maheshpur station following an altercation over the harassment of a female passenger. The incident, which caused damage to several windows, stemmed from a previous dispute on the train.
A violent incident unfolded last Sunday night at approximately 9:15 PM when a Dhaka-bound Abhijatree commuter train came under attack at the Maheshpur railway station, located in Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj district. The sudden assault resulted in extensive property damage, leaving the railway authorities and passengers deeply shaken by the scale of the violence that erupted on the station platform.
According to verified reports, the sequence of events began earlier when a female passenger faced harassment aboard the moving train before it reached Maheshpur. This unacceptable behavior immediately triggered strong protests from fellow passengers, setting off a tense chain reaction that quickly escalated as the train approached the station.
The situation deteriorated rapidly upon arrival at Maheshpur station, where the initial grievance over passenger harassment transformed into a heated verbal altercation between the train travelers and local residents gathered in the area. What started as angry shouting matches soon degenerated into physical altercations and mutual scuffles right on the station grounds.
As the confrontation intensified between the local residents and the passengers, a group of local people resorted to active violence by pelting the commuter train with stones. The barrage of heavy stones caused significant structural damage to the railway carriages, shattering several of the train's glass windows into dangerous fragments.
Investigators tracing the root causes of the violence confirmed that the unrest was further fueled by an earlier confrontation. Before the train departed from Bhanga station, a separate dispute had broken out regarding seat allocation inside the compartments, during which a passenger named Mohammad Rohan was physically assaulted.
