Comilla University Student Alleges Overnight Ragging in Hall

A fresh controversy has emerged at Comilla University involving allegations of ragging and subsequent counter-complaints. Amir হোসেন, a student of the Economics department for the 2024-25 academic session, has officially lodged a written complaint with the university proctor. According to the details provided in the complaint, the alleged incident took place during the night of August 16, 2024, inside room 312 of the Vijay-24 Hall.

Detailing the ordeal, complainant Amir Hossain stated that he was summoned to a room where he was subjected to ragging until 3 a.m. He recounted that the perpetrators hurled abusive language at him and repeatedly lunged to beat him. Despite his pleas for forgiveness, the ragging did not stop, eventually driving him to flee the room in desperation when he could no longer bear the situation.

Amir further elaborated on his vulnerable personal circumstances, sharing that his father passed away four months ago. He sustains his studies, living expenses, and family remittances by working as a private tutor, which had already left him mentally distressed. The harrowing experience of that night severely amplified his mental pressure, causing him to fall ill from continuous crying and sleeplessness. Driven by this extreme emotional distress the following day, he called Ontu Das and issued a threat, though he claimed he harbored no malicious intent.

On the other side of the dispute, Ontu Das denied the allegations entirely. He stated that he had no knowledge of the complaint and maintained that no ragging took place, asserting instead that Amir behaved very rudely when leaving their room. Following the dispute, Ontu Das filed an online general diary (GD) at the Comilla Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station, reporting that he was threatened with murder over the phone by Amir through his brother.

Local law enforcement and university officials have begun addressing the overlapping disputes. Ziaur Rahman, an official, confirmed that Ontu Das recently filed an online general diary regarding a phone threat to kill him, noting that both the complainant and the accused are students of the Economics department. Ziaur added that after speaking with Amir for investigative purposes, he learned that three individuals, including Ontu Das, had allegedly ragged Amir, and that the investigation remains ongoing while suggesting that resolution through the university's proctorial body would be ideal.

Meanwhile, department and hall authorities have offered varying perspectives on the matter. Mohammad Hasan claimed that no ragging occurred, stating the students only visited his room regarding hall accommodation matters and that the allegations are false. Economics department teacher Md. Shamimul Islam stated that upon learning of the issue, he mediated between both sides and assigned senior students from the 2020-21 academic session to resolve the matter since it concerned seniors and juniors. Although the seniors initially reported a settlement, Shamimul noted he only recently learned of the proctorial complaint, adding that he has done everything required on his part. Mahmudul Hasan Khan indicated the matter was reported verbally and promised cooperation if a proctorial investigation committee is formed. Finally, Mahmudul Hasan confirmed that the complaint letter has been received, stating that the matter will be verified and effective steps taken promptly.
