Chittagong University Students Face Ongoing Struggles After Clashes

Violent clashes erupted between students of Chittagong University and local residents on August 30 and 31 last year, resulting in approximately 400 students sustaining injuries during the unrest. The disturbances took place at Chittagong University, located in Hathazari, Bangladesh, leaving a lasting impact on the academic community and the individuals directly affected by the widespread violence.

Among those caught in the turmoil, three critically injured students have been identified as Mamun Mia, Imtiaz Ahmed, and Naimul Islam. These individuals are still struggling significantly with ongoing physical and financial challenges resulting from the violent events of last year, highlighting the prolonged difficulties faced by victims of the campus clashes.

Detailing his severe condition, Imtiaz Ahmed stated, 'My physical condition is extremely poor. I cannot stand for long. Doctors have advised me to use a walking stick. Because of nerve-related problems, my body suddenly jerks.' He also added regarding institutional support, 'Our medical committee has also been dissolved. Even after submitting treatment bills and vouchers to the administration, we have not received the full amount. A significant sum is still outstanding.'

Another injured student, Naimul Islam, described his persistent health issues and lack of resources, stating, 'The pain in my hand persists. I cannot lift heavy objects, and it is particularly severe in the morning. I still need medical treatment, but I do not have the financial means to continue it.'

Addressing the administrative response, Shahadat Hossain explained, 'The committee was formed specifically to deal with the emergency situation arising from the incident.' Meanwhile, M Al-Amin defended the university's actions by noting, 'The university has made considerable efforts to cover their expenses and provide assistance. So, when someone says we are not providing this or that, it is painful for us. Over the past year, we have tried to ensure they receive all possible support and facilities.'

In the aftermath of the violence, a formal case was filed by Abdul Rahim at the Hathazari Model Police Station. The legal filing named 95 to 98 people and accused 800 to 1,000 anonymous individuals. According to Rokon Nath, 'Eleven people were arrested in the case. All of them are currently out on bail.' Addressing the legal status of the suspects, Mohammad Al-Forkan remarked, 'If they have been granted bail, it was the court that granted it. Our case is still ongoing. Once the court grants bail, there is little we can do.'
