Chittagong Court Grants Bail to Accused in Pregnant Stray Dog Killing Case

A Chittagong court on Sunday granted bail to Babla Das, an accused in a prominent case concerning the death of a pregnant stray dog that was crushed under the wheels of a vehicle in the port city.
The tragic incident took place on the night of December 4 last year within the capital of the Chittagong division, specifically in the bustling DC Hill area of the city, sparking widespread local attention and legal scrutiny regarding animal safety.
Following the incident, legal proceedings were initiated through local authorities. The case initially targeted the driver of the pickup van and a security guard who were exiting through the main gate of DC Hill, before subsequent investigations culminated in the inclusion of Babla Das in the formal charges.
On Sunday, September 6, 2026, the accused Babla Das appeared before the Chittagong Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court to surrender. During the proceedings, his legal representatives submitted a formal plea for his release.
Upon hearing the arguments, the presiding judicial authority at the Chittagong Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court granted the bail application submitted on behalf of Babla Das, allowing him to remain out of custody while the legal process continues.
Voicing concerns over the proceedings, Nazbin Sultana Jeni stated that the primary accused, Babla Das, surrendered in court and applied for bail, which was subsequently approved following the hearing. She noted that while the initial case targeted the pickup van driver and a security guard exiting through the DC Hill main gate, Das was later added to the charge sheet, though court police allegedly did not inform them regarding the submission of the charge sheet and the bail application.
