Chinese Man Travels to Bangladesh for WeChat Romance, Sparks Local Stir
A 29-year-old Chinese national has traveled to Narayanganj to pursue a romantic relationship with a local woman. However, wedding delays and swelling crowds have sparked widespread community gossip and police intervention.
In an unusual cross-border romance that has captured local attention, a 29-year-old Chinese national named Huang Zhilin traveled to Bangladesh to be with a woman he met online. According to verified reports from Jago News, Mr. Zhilin made the long journey from China to Rupganj in the Narayanganj district specifically because of a romantic relationship he developed with Sumaiya Begum.
The international romance originally blossomed on the digital landscape through the social media application WeChat. According to the documented timeline of events, the couple connected virtually on the messaging platform approximately a month prior to Mr. Zhilin making the bold decision to board a flight and visit Bangladesh in person to meet Ms. Begum.
Mr. Zhilin officially arrived in Bangladesh on Sunday, September 6, 2026, traveling directly to Rupganj, Narayanganj to cement his relationship with Sumaiya Begum. However, his presence in the local neighborhood quickly drew intense curiosity, large crowds, and subsequent community gossip as residents gathered to catch a glimpse of the foreign visitor staying in the area.
As the days passed without a formal wedding ceremony taking place, the situation began to stir controversy among local residents. A local resident named Kabir Hossain commented on the unfolding situation, stating that the foreign youth from China was staying at Sumaiya's home without an official marriage having yet taken place, which consequently initiated a debate among the villagers. Mr. Hossain added that to manage the growing tension and attention, they subsequently sent Ms. Begum away to the Jangir Fakirbari area.
Addressing the delays surrounding the nuptials, a local individual identified as Sharif defended the timeline, explaining that there is no fundamental objection to solemnizing the marriage. However, Sharif noted that the delay is purely due to the time required to secure formal consent from the groom's family abroad as well as allowing adequate preparation time for the bride's own family.
Amid the growing local commotion and the swirling neighborhood gossip regarding the unperformed wedding, law enforcement authorities have taken note of the foreign national's presence. Officer Mokhtar Hossain of the Rupganj Police Station addressed the unexpected situation by stating that the matter was initially unknown to the police department, but authorities would promptly investigate and look into the details.
