China Boosts Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling Amid Surge in Waste

China has intensified its nationwide initiatives aimed at recycling used electric vehicles and new energy vehicle (NEV) batteries, addressing a massive surge in both industrial production and environmental safety regulations. As the domestic automotive market continues its rapid expansion, the management of retired power sources has become a critical focal point for regulatory bodies seeking to mitigate potential environmental hazards while securing vital battery-grade minerals.

Projections for the sector indicate that production and sales figures for new energy vehicles in the country are expected to surpass 16 million units in 2025. Concurrently, industry estimates suggest that approximately 500,000 metric tons of electric vehicle batteries could become obsolete and unusable over the course of the year, underscoring the urgent need for robust handling and reclamation infrastructure.

Under the established regulatory framework, vehicle owners and related entities are strictly required to transfer retired NEV power batteries directly to authorized recycling institutions once they are uninstalled from the vehicles. This mandatory handover protocol ensures that hazardous materials are systematically intercepted before entering the standard municipal waste stream, thereby preventing severe ecological contamination.

Advanced processing technologies employed within these recycling facilities have demonstrated remarkable efficiency in material recovery. Current operational data reveals that valuable components such as nickel, cobalt, and manganese are being successfully reclaimed at rates of up to 99.6 percent. Furthermore, more than 90 percent of the lithium content is being efficiently extracted from the older power units for subsequent industrial reuse.

Complementing these physical recycling measures, China officially enacted a new interim measure on April 1. This regulation mandates the implementation of a unique digital identification system and a comprehensive traceability platform for every single battery produced and circulated within the market, ensuring complete lifecycle oversight from manufacturing to final disposal.
