Chinese Cities Replace Celebrities With Top Scientists on Billboards

In a striking cultural shift across China, the portraits of prominent celebrities and pop culture icons are being replaced by images of top scientists on large billboards situated in bustling public squares and busy metro stations. This nationwide display honors the monumental scientific contributions and legacies of pioneering figures who have shaped the nation's technological and agricultural landscape.

Among the distinguished individuals featured on these prominent public displays are Qian Xuesen, Deng Jiaxian, and Yuan Longping. These celebrated scientists are being prominently remembered for their groundbreaking work, serving as prominent role models for the general public and commuters passing through the busy transit hubs and urban centers where the billboards have been erected.

The State-backed newspaper Global Times has highlighted this significant trend, noting a distinct contrast in youth aspirations globally. While surveys indicate that children in the United States often express a greater interest in becoming social media influencers, young people in China increasingly aspire to pursue careers as astronauts, reflecting the heightened national focus on science and space exploration.

This public celebration of scientific achievement underscores a broader societal effort within China to elevate researchers and intellectuals to the status of national heroes. By placing figures like Qian Xuesen, Deng Jiaxian, and Yuan Longping in the visual spaces typically reserved for commercial celebrities and entertainment stars, the initiative aims to inspire the next generation through tangible examples of academic and technological excellence.
