Boat Race Tension Sparks Official Intervention in Sylhet

A scheduled annual boat race competition on the Sonai River in Sylhet's Beani Bazar upazila has become the center of a local dispute, prompting intervention from the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and local authorities. The traditional event, which is officially scheduled to take place on August 28, 2026, in the Trigungarmukh area along the Sonai River, has drawn opposition from a faction operating under the banner of 'Towhidi Janata'. According to reports from media outlets including Prothom Alo, Ittefaq, and Jago News, members of this group have utilized social media platforms and held meetings to demand the cancellation of the upcoming competition.

Organizers of the traditional event have announced prominent prizes to attract participants and spectators to the rural gathering. Specifically, the competition features a large cow designated as the first prize, alongside a goat which will be awarded as the second prize. However, the opposition from the 'Towhidi Janata' faction has created a tense atmosphere surrounding the preparations, leading to divided stances among local residents and community elders within the Lauta Union Parishad jurisdiction.

Defending the traditional event, Lauta Union Parishad representative Umme Habiba Majumdar downplayed the severity of the controversy. According to her, the situation is not as it has been portrayed and does not constitute a major issue. She noted that the boat race has been held traditionally in the area for a long time, and the opposition arose recently after a religious figure spoke out against the event, claiming that rural gatherings of this nature frequently involve fighting and thus demanding its cancellation.

Echoing similar sentiments, Aminul Islam stated that only a handful of individuals are opposing the organization and staging protests. He emphasized that the senior elders of Lauta Union planned to convene a meeting with both opposing sides on Saturday afternoon to address the concerns. Asserting that the community broadly supports the event, Islam expressed hope that the boat race would proceed as planned at the appointed time.

To de-escalate the rising tensions, local officials have stepped in to mediate between the conflicting groups. Gaus Uddin confirmed that ongoing efforts are being made to bring an end to the tense situation and find a peaceful resolution to the disagreement. Concurrently, Md. Delwar Hossain stated that the UNO has instructed both parties to meet at his office on Saturday at 5:00 PM, adding that authorities are checking on both sides and remain confident that the matter will be successfully resolved through discussion.
