Bangladesh Task Force Holds Emergency Meeting to Tackle Mosquito-Borne Diseases
The national task force on mosquito-borne diseases met urgently in Dhaka to address the dengue situation. Officials reported that nearly 90 people have died from the virus since January.
An emergency meeting of the national task force committee formed to prevent dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases was held on August 30 at the Secretariat in Dhaka. The high-level gathering convened to address the ongoing public health challenge posed by vector-borne illnesses across the country, focusing specifically on strengthening current prevention strategies and coordination among relevant local government bodies.
The meeting was presided over by Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, who serves in a leadership role within the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, alongside State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam. During the session, comprehensive discussions took place regarding the deployment of resources and the implementation of targeted interventions to curb the spread of dengue in major urban centers and surrounding areas.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan emphasized that the government is placing the highest priority on halting the spread of dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases. He stated that alongside destroying the breeding sources of mosquito larvae, efforts are underway to enhance research and technical capabilities to increase the effectiveness of the chemicals and medicines currently used for mosquito eradication.
Highlighting the specific geographical hurdles, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan noted that densely populated and large areas such as the Dhaka North City Corporation, Dhaka South City Corporation, and the Gazipur City Corporation present significant challenges for mosquito control. He acknowledged that despite operating with limited resources, these city corporations are working wholeheartedly to manage the situation.
Providing updates on the epidemiological situation, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam informed the committee that the number of dengue patients this year has dropped to approximately half compared to the figures recorded during the corresponding period of last year. Official statistics presented during the meeting further revealed that from January of the current year up until yesterday, nearly 90 people have died while undergoing treatment for dengue.
In addition to the fatalities, the meeting reviewed recovery data indicating that approximately 2,200 to 2,500 patients have successfully received treatment and returned home after recovering from the disease during this same timeframe. The Local Government Division, along with the participating city corporations, continues to coordinate closely under the framework of the national task force committee to maintain these positive trends and protect public health.
