Bangladesh suspends 20% bakery price hike pending review

Business leaders have officially agreed to temporarily suspend their previous decision to increase the price of essential bakery products, specifically biscuits and bread, by 20 percent. The development follows high-level discussions aimed at addressing consumer concerns regarding rising living costs and the affordability of staple food items.

The crucial meeting took place on Tuesday evening at the Commerce Ministry, located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The formal gathering brought together key industry stakeholders and government officials to deliberate on the proposed price adjustments and their potential economic impact on the general public.

The discussions were presided over by Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, who oversaw the dialogue between the ministry and the commercial representatives. Alongside the Commerce Minister, other notable participants present at the ministry included Nasir Uddoula, Mo. Ataur Rahman Khan, and Mo. Jahirul Islam.

To thoroughly evaluate the situation, a specialized committee has been established as a direct outcome of the Tuesday evening meeting. This newly formed investigative body will be led by Nasir Uddoula, who serves as the Chairman of the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission.

The newly appointed committee has been given a comprehensive mandate to examine all relevant financial factors associated with the bakery sector. Specifically, the team will review production expenses, marketing costs, fluctuations in raw material prices, as well as applicable taxes and duties.

Following the conclusion of their detailed financial review, the committee has been formally instructed to submit its findings and recommendations. The group is required to present its complete report to the authorities within a strict timeframe of just seven days.
