Bangladesh Sees First Successful Venous Sinus Stenting for Pulsatile Tinnitus

Medical professionals in Bangladesh have achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing the country's first venous sinus stenting procedure to treat a complex brain blood vessel condition. The breakthrough medical intervention took place at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital, marking a notable advancement in local neurological healthcare capabilities and offering new hope to patients suffering from rare vascular disorders.

The patient at the center of this landmark procedure is Rabiul Islam, who hails from Gaibandha. Rabiul Islam had been suffering for a long period from a specialized medical condition known as pulsatile tinnitus. In cases of pulsatile tinnitus, patients experience an unusual sound, often described as a rushing or whooshing noise, that matches the exact rhythm of their heartbeat as the blood flows near the ear.

The chronic condition severely disrupted the daily life and well-being of the patient. Describing the profound impact of the illness prior to the medical intervention, Rabiul Islam stated that the symptoms were debilitating. He explained that the persistent whooshing sound in his ears robbed him of sleep and made it impossible for him to carry out any work properly. Having sought treatment at various places without finding any relief, he eventually broke down mentally from the ordeal.

Seeking a definitive solution to his suffering, the patient came under the care of Dr. Humayun Kabir Himu, an associate professor at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital. Dr. Humayun Kabir Himu evaluated the case and determined the appropriate course of action to address the underlying vascular anomaly causing the rhythmic noise.

To correct the problem, the medical team utilized an advanced endovascular approach rather than traditional open surgery. Dr. Humayun Kabir Himu successfully performed the medical procedure by placing a stent inside the venous sinus, which is a blood vessel located within the brain, using a specialized catheter to restore normal blood flow dynamics and eliminate the distressing symptoms.
