Bangladesh Reports 994 New Dengue Hospitalizations and Three Deaths

Bangladesh has recorded a significant surge in dengue cases and fatalities, according to the latest official data released on 24 August. Over the preceding 24-hour period, health authorities documented 994 individuals being admitted to hospitals across the country due to dengue virus infections. This sharp increase contributes to a rapidly growing cumulative total of hospital admissions as the mosquito-borne illness continues to affect communities nationwide.

In addition to the high volume of new hospitalizations, the Directorate General of Health Services reported three new deaths linked to dengue within the same 24-hour window. These latest fatalities elevate the total death toll from the disease to 85 individuals since the beginning of the year. A breakdown of the monthly fatalities shows 31 deaths recorded in August, following 36 deaths in July, 13 in June, one in May, and two fatalities during each of the months of January and February.

With the addition of the 994 newly reported cases, the total number of hospital admissions for dengue across Bangladesh this year has now reached 29,923. The geographic spread of these current hospitalizations highlights widespread transmission, with the Dhaka division recording 381 patients, the Khulna division reporting 215, Barishal registering 117, and Chattogram seeing 107 admissions.

Further regional distribution data from the health directorate indicates that Mymensingh and Rajshahi are also managing significant patient loads. Specifically, 71 patients were admitted in the Mymensingh area, while 76 individuals sought hospital care for dengue within the Rajshahi division during the ongoing health crisis.

Amid the rising number of infections and hospital admissions, health officials also highlighted recoveries as patients complete their treatments. Over the 24-hour reporting period, 862 patients successfully recovered and were discharged to return to their homes. This brings the cumulative number of recoveries since the beginning of the year to 27,758 individuals who have been discharged from hospitals following treatment for the virus.
