Bangladesh Police Review Crime Data as Khulna Given One Month

The quarterly crime review meeting of Bangladesh Police was held yesterday Saturday at the Rajarbag Police Lines located in Dhaka. The high-level gathering brought together key officials to evaluate the law and order situation across the country, examining a detailed breakdown of crime statistics gathered from various districts, ranges, and metropolitan areas over the preceding months.

During the proceedings at Rajarbag Police Lines, authorities issued a strict directive regarding the southern region. Specifically, the meeting established a one-month deadline to achieve a visible improvement in the law and order situation within the Khulna region, setting clear performance expectations for law enforcement personnel operating in the area.

The comprehensive review session featured Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed participating as the chief guest. Alongside the home minister, several prominent officials were documented as present at the meeting, including Monzur Morshed Chowdhury, Ali Hossain Fakir, Sajjadur Rahman, Mostafizur Rahman, Sarkar Omar Farooq, and Abdul Quddus Chowdhury.

The extensive data presented during the quarterly evaluation highlighted fluctuating crime figures, particularly regarding violence against women and children. Official records for the year indicated that cases stood at 1,281 in January, 1,181 in February, and 1,485 in March, bringing the total for the first three months of the year to 3,947 cases. Moving into the second quarter, the figures recorded 2,011 cases in April, 1,952 in May, and 2,200 in June, resulting in a total of 6,163 cases for the April-to-June three-month period.

The crime review also detailed regional homicide statistics and specific case filings across various jurisdictions. For the month of July, recorded killings included 66 in the Dhaka Range, 54 in the Chittagong Range, and 29 in the Khulna Range, while broader data noted 85 total killings in the Khulna Range between May and July. Additionally, metropolitan and urban data showed 29 murders in the Khulna area from January to the present, alongside 99 total killings in the Khulna Metropolitan Police area following the 2024 mass uprising, with 9 murders occurring over a recent three-month span in Khulna city. Further July figures for newly registered murder cases included 4 in Chittagong Metropolitan, 3 in Khulna, 1 in Rajshahi, 5 in Sylhet, and 7 in Gazipur.
