Bangladesh Parliament Hears Education Ministry Updates and Proposals
The Bangladesh government plans to recruit office assistants in primary schools and introduce the July mass uprising into textbooks by 2027. These developments were shared during parliamentary proceedings in Dhaka on September 8.
During a session at the Jatiya Sangsad in Dhaka on September 8, the Ministry of Education and related bodies presented comprehensive updates regarding the country's academic framework, addressing questions and proposals from lawmakers including Bobby Hajjaj, A N M Ehsanul Haque Milan, Kaisar Kamal, Nazrul Islam, Rokeya Begum, Md. Shawkatul Islam, Abdul Muntakim, Rafiqul Islam Khan, Salah Uddin, and Obaidullah Salafi.
To alleviate the administrative burden on teaching staff within government primary institutions, the government has officially proposed the recruitment of a dedicated office assistant for every single primary school across the nation. According to the presented details, the execution of this specific office assistant recruitment proposal remains formally subject to the final approval of the Fifth Primary Education Development Programme (PEDP-5).
In addition to administrative adjustments, the educational authorities outlined structural curriculum plans indicating that regular religious education, fine arts, and musical practice will soon be made compulsory across all primary schools. Furthermore, the government confirmed that textbooks will incorporate various subjects concerning the July mass uprising starting precisely from the upcoming 2027 academic year, alongside a targeted initiative to document the Awami League government's era of enforced disappearances, mass killings, and money laundering within the ninth and tenth-grade 'History of Bangladesh and World Civilization' textbook.
The parliamentary disclosures also highlighted targeted nutritional interventions for religious institutions, noting that under the Secondary Education Development Programme (SEDP), mid-day meals will be systematically introduced across all madrasas in the country between the 2026-27 and 2030-31 fiscal years. Current figures presented during the session revealed that the total number of MPO-listed madrasas in Bangladesh currently stands at 8,229, which encompasses 5,768 Dakhil madrasas, 1,284 Alim madrasas, 993 Fazil madrasas, and 184 Kamil madrasas.
Addressing the broader primary schooling sector, the government reported that the present drop-out rate among students at the primary level rests at 16.25 percent. Furthermore, officials stated that while there are currently 1,873 registered private primary schools in the country, the government maintains no immediate plans to nationalize these specific institutions, whereas a total of 1,783 kindergarten schools have successfully been brought under official registration up to July 2026.
