Bangladesh Orders Rooftop Solar Systems on All Local Govt Offices
The Local Government Division has issued a directive requiring rooftop solar power systems on all district and upazila level administrative buildings. Authorities must complete the installations by January 31, 2027, with mandatory battery backup.

In an official directive issued on September 15, the Local Government Division has ordered the installation of rooftop solar power systems across all district and upazila level administrative buildings throughout Bangladesh. The new mandate specifically targets all main official buildings and various structures operating under the jurisdiction of the district councils, marking a significant push toward renewable energy adoption within local government infrastructure.
According to the directives released by the district council branch of the Local Government Division, every single installation must be equipped with a minimum of two hours of battery backup capability. This technical requirement ensures that essential local government operations can continue uninterrupted even during power outages or grid failures, thereby enhancing the operational resilience of regional administrative offices.
To finance these green energy projects, the administration has authorized the use of funds from either the Annual Development Programme or local revenue funds. This financial flexibility is intended to help local authorities implement the rooftop solar infrastructure without facing immediate budgetary constraints as they work to meet the national government's renewable energy goals.
Under the framework of the Net Metering Guidelines for 2025, participating facilities will also be eligible for financial returns. Any surplus electricity generated by these rooftop solar systems that is subsequently fed back into the national grid will be compensated at a rate of 10 taka and 50 poisha per unit.
The Local Government Division has set a strict timeline for the nationwide rollout of these renewable energy systems. All designated district and upazila level offices and council structures must complete the installation of their rooftop solar power systems no later than January 31, 2027.
