Bangladesh has embarked on significant policy shifts pointing toward the privatization of essential sectors, encompassing power, fuel, and medicine pricing. These administrative decisions signal a major turn in the country's economic and regulatory landscape, drawing attention to state-controlled frameworks established decades ago.

In the energy sector, historical foundations are currently facing a pivot toward private enterprise. Ziaur Rahman previously established the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) in 1976, alongside the Rural Electrification Board (REB) in 1977. However, recent directives from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) on August 6 instructed BPC to draft a policy opening refined fuel import and distribution to private companies.

This push toward private fuel operations follows internal resistance within the regulatory body. An 11-member BPC committee had previously recommended against privatising fuel imports on July 21. Following this recommendation, BPC chairman Rezanur Rahman was removed from his position and made an officer on special duty.

The policy changes also extend into the healthcare sector, specifically regarding the affordability of pharmaceuticals. On August 3, the cabinet officially scrapped the expanded list of 295 price-controlled essential medicines. With this decision, the government reverted strictly to an older 1994 list containing only 117 drugs, effectively lifting price controls on a vast number of medications.

The broader restructuring of these essential sectors involves multiple political figures and corporate entities mentioned in connection with the nation's governance history and economic framework, including Sibbir Ahmad, Ariful Islam Abir, the Awami League, the BNP, Bashundhara Group, and Bashundhara Oil and Gas Company Limited. As the Energy and Mineral Resources Division works on the newly ordered private fuel policies, the full extent of the privatization push across power and other vital industries continues to unfold.
