A significant milestone in Bangladesh's healthcare sector was reached in 2025 with the official construction and handover of the new 15-storey building for the National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital (NINH). Located in Agargaon, Dhaka, the newly completed infrastructure marks a major expansion for the specialized medical facility, which originally traces its roots back to a foundation stone laid by former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in 2006.

Following the initial groundwork laid in 2006, the institution officially came into establishment in 2012 as a 10-storey hospital building. To meet the ever-growing demand for specialized neurological care—where roughly 3,000 patients seek medical treatment in the outpatient department every single day—planning for further expansion moved forward. Consequently, construction work on the ambitious 15-storey new building officially commenced in 2019.

The large-scale development project was backed by a substantial financial allocation. Specifically, a total of 506 crore taka was allocated for the comprehensive construction of the building alongside the procurement of necessary advanced medical equipment. Through careful fiscal management during the execution of the project, authorities successfully saved 13 crore taka from the initially designated budget.

With the completion of the 15-storey structure, the facility now operates as a comprehensive 500-bed hospital dedicated to neurological disorders. The official handover of the new building to the hospital authorities took place in 2025, culminating years of development that began with the commencement of construction works six years prior.

Reflecting on the scale and capability of the expanded facility, Professor Dr. Badrul Alam highlighted its prominent standing in the region. He stated that the treatment standards of this neuroscience hospital can be compared favorably with any country in the world, proudly noting that it now stands as the single largest neuroscience hospital in South Asia.
