The banking sector in Bangladesh is confronting a continuing challenge with asset quality, as official data reveals a substantial escalation in defaulted loans during the first half of the year. According to the latest figures released by Bangladesh Bank, the total amount of defaulted loans within the country's banking sector stood at Tk 6,06,555 crore by the end of June.

This sharp increase means that a significant portion of the financial system's credit is now classified as non-performing. Specifically, by the close of June, the total volume of defaulted loans accounted for 32.78 percent of all loans distributed by banks across Bangladesh.

A comparative analysis of the quarterly data indicates a swift upward trajectory in financial distress within the institutions. At the conclusion of the preceding quarter in March, the total amount of defaulted loans recorded across the banking sector was Tk 5,88,704 crore.

Consequently, the financial metrics demonstrate that within a span of just three months, from March to June, the total volume of defaulted loans expanded by Tk 17,851 crore. During that earlier March period, the proportion of defaulted credit stood at 32.26 percent of the total distributed loans in the banking sector.

The continuous expansion of non-performing assets underscores ongoing economic pressures and structural challenges facing financial institutions in Bangladesh. As regulatory authorities and banking institutions navigate these developments, the rising volume of distressed credit remains a central focus for the nation's financial sector observers.
