Are Bangladeshis' NID details on the dark web? Fears of data leaks grow
Claims that Bangladeshi citizens' National ID data is circulating on the dark web have raised fresh alarm. No mass sale has been independently verified, but earlier breaches keep the risk very real.
Fresh concern has emerged over the security of personal information tied to Bangladesh's National Identity (NID) cards, after claims spread online that citizens' data may be circulating on the dark web. Officials and analysts caution that no evidence has yet independently confirmed a mass sale of the NID database, and they have urged the public not to amplify unverified claims from social media.
The anxiety is not baseless. In 2023, a government website exposed the personal information of a very large number of citizens, an incident that drew international attention. Reports at the time said data belonging to more than 50 million people had been left accessible, including names, phone numbers, email addresses and NID numbers. The website was taken offline and the leak came under investigation.
Questions deepened in 2025, when an Election Commission inquiry found that NID-related data had reached third parties through several institutions that were authorised to use the verification service. Verification access for some of those institutions was later suspended, renewing scrutiny of how authorised organisations store, use and protect citizens' data.
Security specialists warn that if identity data does reach cyber criminals, it can be combined with names, dates of birth and addresses to commit identity theft, register fraudulent SIM cards or open accounts in victims' names. They advise citizens to be cautious about where they share NID details, and to treat unsolicited calls or messages asking for personal information as suspect.
