A severe public health challenge is unfolding across Bangladesh as the overuse and indiscriminate application of antibiotics drive a dangerous rise in drug resistance. Throughout the country, antibiotics remain easily accessible to both the general public and unqualified practitioners, known as quack doctors, who routinely dispense these powerful medications without requiring a medical prescription.
This pervasive accessibility has fostered deeply concerning domestic health habits, most notably among parents. In many households, children are frequently given antibiotics by their families to treat minor fevers without ever consulting a qualified physician. Medical observers note that antibiotic resistance is increasingly developing within human bodies due to widespread ignorance and irresponsible usage patterns typically found in developing nations.
At the biological level, bacteria develop this alarming resistance through several mechanisms, including genetic mutations, plasmids, or jumping genes, which possess the capability to spread rapidly to other bacterial populations. Furthermore, clinical practices such as administering incorrect dosages, failing to complete the full prescribed course of the drugs, and utilizing the wrong antibiotics altogether significantly accelerate the resistance process.
The tangible consequences of this crisis are already evident in the treatment of major illnesses. For instance, ciprofloxacin is no longer as effective for treating enteric fever or typhoid as it historically used to be due to widespread and indiscriminate use, forcing medical professionals to rely instead on third-generation cephalosporins. Similarly, resistance has steadily developed against other formerly reliable, low-cost effective antibiotics such as cotrimoxazole and tetracycline.
The compounding pressures on the healthcare system are further illustrated by vulnerable patient populations. Tuberculosis patients in the country are increasingly falling victim to the effects of antibiotic resistance. Additionally, pandemic-era practices left a lasting mark, as azithromycin was heavily consumed and used extensively throughout the course of the COVID-19 outbreak.
