Accused Killer Sworn In as Mongla Port Association Secretary in Bangladesh

The brother of a top criminal in Khulna, identified as an accused in a murder case, has formally taken oath as the general secretary of the Mongla Port Agent Association. The swearing-in ceremony took place on Saturday, drawing significant attention due to the background of the official involved, Mahamudun Chowdhury Jony, who is the brother of top criminal Rony Chowdhury.

The controversy surrounds the circumstances of the murder case and subsequent police actions involving the family. On March 4, Masum Billah, former convener of Rupsa Upazila Sramik Dal, was shot and hacked to death at Dakbanglo intersection in Khulna city. Following the fatal incident, law enforcement authorities launched investigations into the violent crime.

Subsequent police operations led directly to the residence of top criminal Rony Chowdhury in Khulna. On the night of June 14, police conducted a raid at the house and arrested Mahamudun Chowdhury Jony, who was later placed on a police remand for further questioning regarding the ongoing criminal investigation.

Despite his arrest and naming in the murder case file, Jony recently secured release on bail from custody. Following his release, he participated in the leadership formalities of the trade body, where all candidates had previously been elected unopposed during elections held on May 23.

Defending his accession to the post, Mahamudun Chowdhury Jony stated that police had arrested him as a suspect, noting that his name was not originally in the primary case statement. He added that the plaintiff had informed the court of his non-involvement in the killing, declaring that the legal matter at that level had concluded.

Election officials and local leaders also addressed the transition and the administration of the oath. Mujibur Rahman explained that individual nomination papers were collected and submitted for each position, with no withdrawals, leading to uncontested victories. He added that due to existing association issues, he administered their oath on Saturday, while Moniruzzaman Moni remarked that individuals had approached them to resolve an administrative standstill.
